Recycle Week

It’s Recycle Week – an annual celebration of recycling across the nation announced by resources charity, WRAP. And what better way to celebrate than to explore all the great things we’re already doing to reduce food waste, reuse materials and encourage recycling at Higgidy.

Saying ‘no’ to food waste

We believe that no good food should go to waste. That’s why we donate any extra pies, quiches, rolls and more to charities such as FareShare Sussex who turn them into meals for those who need them most – something we’ve been doing from way back since we first started in 2003.

In one of our most recent donations, we gave some of our surplus ingredients to UKHarvest, a non-profit organisation who provide much-needed support to charities and vulnerable people by helping to eliminate hunger and food waste. Their chefs have been busy repurposing our donations of pie fillings, sweet potatoes and béchamel to create wonderfully nutritious meals which are distributed to homeless refuges, domestic abuse shelters and pantries.

By teaming up with these devoted non-profit organisations, and the charities we work with as part of the Higgidy Helping Hand Project, we’re really helping to make a difference to the communities around us, which is something we’re incredibly proud of.

Our materials

One of our ambitions is to be kind to the world around us. With this in mind, we are continuously improving and finding new ways to package our recipes with materials that are friendlier to the environment.

Our boxes and sleeves are made from FSC certified cardboard and our windows are made with PE film, which are both recyclable. As well as this, our plastic trays are an R-PET plastic that contribute to the circular economy are made from 100% recycled material, which can also be recycled over 70% of councils in the UK.

Sustainability is a key focus for us as a business and we’ve been working to reduce single use plastic which is why we now use paper cases for all of our Little Quiches and foil trays for our Tortillas. We’re also looking at rolling these alternative materials out across our wider range of recipes so watch this space!

See our FAQ’s for more information on recycling our packaging.

Let’s celebrate

Not only is Recycle Week a chance to celebrate how we help to recycle our food and materials, but it’s also a great focus on where we want to be in the future. With our recent announcement of Higgidy becoming a B Corp business, continuing our donations to charities, and our progress made within our Green Beans Team, we really are aiming for a better future for our environment and our communities.
