Making great tasting food is about more than just crafty flavour combinations, careful cooking, and top-notch ingredients. At Higgidy, we believe in baking a better food future and that change starts with what’s on our plate.
You may have heard that we’ve recently become a B Corp business. Being certified as a B Corp means we’ve been recognised as meeting the highest standards across five core areas, including how we treat our own Higgidy workers, our customers, and the environment. You can find more about our B Corp journey here.
As part of the B Corp Community, made up of like-minded businesses acting as a force for good, we know that there’s still a lot more we can do. That’s why we’re constantly planning, developing, and improving so that we can become even kinder to the planet and the communities around us.
You probably know us best for our range of delicious tasting, top quality food. From wholesome pies and carefully crafted quiches to seriously snackable rolls and muffins, everything is carefully crafted and packed full of flavour, bringing colour, joy and deliciousness to dinner tables, packed lunches, and family fridges up and down the country.
Our scrumptious recipes have even received recognition from a variety of important awarding bodies. This includes the Great Taste Awards, Peta Vegan Food Awards, The Veggie Awards, British Pie Awards, and the World Plant-Based Taste Awards. You can find more about our 2021 award winners and finalists here.
The top-notch ingredients that we use are also an integral part of what makes our recipes unique. We will always use the best ingredients from suppliers we know and trust, including sourcing sweet potato and butternut squash from our carbon neutral neighbours, Barfoots, and free-range chicken from the good people at Packington Free Range. You can find a full list of the great people we work with, here.
Looking after our people is one of our core priorities.
We’re proud to be a Real Living Wage Employer, paying our team a rate that is based on what it actually costs to meet the everyday cost of living. We’re also proud to be able to share our Gender Pay Report.
In addition to this we’re always keen to ensure that Higgidy HQ is an enjoyable place to be. That’s why we’re currently embarking on a site expansion to increase the size of our Sussex-based kitchen and include more recreational areas for our team to enjoy. One recent addition is the Higgidy Meadow – an open space for our team to enjoy breaks outside in the fresh air (subject to the British weather!).
Since way back when we started making our first recipes in 2003, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make a positive difference to the communities around us. We’ve continued our long-standing relationship with FareShare Sussex, donating surplus pies, quiches and rolls that can be turned into meals for those who need them most and we’ve recently started to do the same with UK Harvest.
During COVID, we also setup our own Higgidy Helping Hand Project. Team members from across the business came together to pack and distribute over 41,000 goodie bags to local charities and initiatives.
We recognise that we are in a climate emergency and we’re passionate about finding ways to be kinder to the planet. Although we’ve taken some positive steps already, by becoming B Corp certified, initiating our own internal Green Beans Team and creating a new Sustainability Manager role, we still appreciate that we have a long way to go.
One key priority for us is to improve our carbon footprint across the business. We’re currently working to gain a good understanding of our current performance which will in turn help us to set some ambitious targets for the future. Watch this space!
The UK throws away 9.52 million tonnes of food per year which emits 25 million tonnes of CO2e. This is a stark figure, and we will always work hard to play our part in limiting the amount of food that goes to waste.
We’re currently looking to reduce our initial food waste from within the Higgidy kitchen and our production processes however, we donate any surplus recipes to our charity partners and networks. This way we can fill bellies over bins. Find out more here.
70% of our range is vegetarian and vegan. This way we can always give you plenty of tasty treats which also help reduce meat and dairy consumption.
All of the Chicken we use is free-range and comes from our suppliers at Packington in Staffordshire who received a Good Chicken award from Compassion in World Farming.
Using free-range eggs is important to us and something we’ve insisted on since day one. That’s why we support the brilliant work of the dedicated team at the British Hen Welfare Trust. Not only do they encourage consumers to buy and suppliers to use free-range eggs but they also work with fantastic volunteers to re-home ex-commercial laying hens, ensuring they enjoy a free-range retirement.
We’re currently working to reduce our use of single-use plastics. One of the ways we’ve already made positive steps forward is by transitioning from R-PET plastic trays to paper cases across our range of Little Quiches. This is something that we’re proud to say will be rolling out across our wider range this year.
We also make sure that where we do use plastic, it’s made from recycled materials and is able to be further recycled, either at home or at supermarket recycling points. Find out more about how and where you can recycle our packaging, here.
